A one-page CAPS Grade 6 Maths poster on decimal fractions (Fractions and decimals), with the key ideas, key words and a tip to remember.
A decimal comma separates the whole numbers from the parts. The first place after the comma is tenths (t). The second place is hundredths (h).
In 42,69 the 6 is 6 tenths = 0,6
The 9 is 9 hundredths = 0,09
910 = 0,9 and 23100 = 0,23
14 = 0,25 and 34 = 0,75 and 12 = 0,5
Write zeros so that the decimals have the same number of places. Then compare like whole numbers.
0,4 and 0,38 become 0,40 and 0,38
0,40 > 0,38, so 0,4 > 0,38
Look at the digit after the place you round to. 5 or more rounds up. 4 or less stays.
4,56 to the nearest whole number is 5
4,56 to 1 decimal place is 4,6
Line up the decimal commas. Write zeros so that every number has the same number of places. Then add or subtract.
6,5 + 3,48 = 6,50 + 3,48 = 9,98
15 − 6,35 = 15,00 − 6,35 = 8,65
0,36 × 10 = 3,6 and 0,36 × 100 = 36
52,4 ÷ 10 = 5,24
3,15 × 4 = 12,60
