Length, mass, capacity and temperature

1Length

Use mm for tiny things, cm and m for everyday lengths and km for long distances.

  • 1 km = 1 000 m
  • 1 m = 100 cm
  • 1 cm = 10 mm
Example

2,8 km = 2,8 × 1 000 = 2 800 m

2Mass and capacity

  • Mass: 1 kg = 1 000 g
  • Capacity: 1 l = 1 000 ml
  • Big containers: 1 kl = 1 000 l
Example

4 200 g = 4 200 ÷ 1 000 = 4,2 kg

3Changing units

To a smaller unit: multiply. To a bigger unit: divide. For km, kg and l, the comma moves 3 places.

Example

0,6 l = 0,6 × 1 000 = 600 ml

4Temperature

Degrees Celsius (°C). Work out what each small mark is worth. To find the change, subtract.

010203040
Example

From 18 °C to 35 °C: 35 − 18 = 17 °C

5Sensible estimates

  • A teaspoon holds about 5 ml.
  • A cooldrink can holds 330 ml.
  • A bag of sugar has a mass of 2 kg.
  • A school desk is about 1 m long.
