A one-page CAPS Grade 6 Maths poster on number patterns and number sentences (Patterns and algebra), with the key ideas, key words and a tip to remember.
A pattern follows a rule. Look at how each number changes to the next one.
6, 13, 20, 27 (add 7)
2, 10, 50, 250 (multiply by 5)
96, 48, 24, 12 (divide by 2)
Work out the difference between neighbours. If it is always the same, add or subtract it. If the numbers grow faster and faster, try multiplying. Check the rule on every pair.
9, 15, 21, 27: 15 − 9 = 6 and 21 − 15 = 6
The rule is add 6.
A flow diagram or table uses a rule on each input to give an output. The rule can have two steps.
Rule: × 4, then − 1
Input 2, 5, 8
Output 7, 19, 31
Count the objects in each pattern and write the numbers in a table. Then find the rule and use it for bigger patterns.
Tables joined in a row seat 4, 6, 8 learners.
Each new table adds 2 seats.
10 tables: 2 × 10 + 2 = 22 seats
A letter stands for an unknown number. Use inverse operations to find it.
5 × n − 3 = 27
5 × n = 30 (add 3)
n = 6 (divide by 5)
Write each step in order. Then solve the number sentence.
I think of a number, triple it and subtract 4. The answer is 20.
3 × n − 4 = 20, so n = 8
