1Possible outcomes

The outcomes are all the things that can happen. A coin has 2. A dice has 6.

ABAC
Example

Outcomes: A, B, C. A is most likely: it is on 2 of the 4 sectors.

2How likely?

  • Impossible: it cannot happen.
  • Unlikely: it probably will not happen.
  • Likely: it probably will happen.
  • Certain: it must happen.
Example

A dice shows 9: impossible.
A dice shows 1 to 6: certain.

3Do an experiment

Repeat the event many times (up to 50). Make a tally mark for each result. Then count each outcome.

4Predict and compare

Expect each outcome to come up about the same share of the time. Real results are close to the prediction, but not exact.

Example

A dice is rolled 30 times.
Expect 16 of 30 = 5 sixes.

5Fair or unfair?

An event is fair when every outcome is equally likely. A coin and a dice are fair. A short experiment may still look unfair. More trials give results that are closer to what you expect.

Key words
