Time

112-hour and 24-hour time

The 24-hour clock has no am or pm. After 12:59, add 12 hours. Midnight is 00:00.

123456789101112
Example

6:50 pm = 6 + 12 = 18:50

2Units of time

  • 60 seconds = 1 minute
  • 60 minutes = 1 hour
  • 24 hours = 1 day
  • 7 days = 1 week
  • 12 months = 1 year

3Time zones

Places far apart have different times. A place that is ahead has a later time: add the hours. A place that is behind has an earlier time: subtract the hours.

Example

Lagos is 1 hour behind South Africa.
18:00 in Pretoria is 17:00 in Lagos.

4Time intervals

Count on to the next whole hour first. Then count the rest.

8:20 to 9:00: 40 min
9:00 to 11:00: 2 h
11:00 to 11:30: 30 min
Total: 3 h 10 min
